1864 Bordeaux Wine Sold at Auction
LONDON (AP) _ A buyer from continental Europe bid $3,176 for an 1864 bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Sotheby’s said.
The wine, one of the most famous French red wines from Bordeaux, was bought Wednesday. The auction house did not release the identities of the seller and buyer.
Sotheby’s said 1864 was the greatest vintage before the vineyards of Europe were ravaged by the parasite phylloxera, which spread from the United States.
It said the 1864 vintage was both abundant and ″exquisite in quality, producing very ripe, luscious and complete wines.″
The bottle was obtained in France by a wine seller in the 1980s, hand carried to his temperature-controlled cellar in the United States, and then hand-carried back across the Atlantic to Sotheby’s.
