Munchkin cat provides big love in small package: Send us your pet rescue stories

MACEDONIA, Ohio -- I rescued my Munchkin kitty Koko (formerly known as Silverstar) about 8 months ago. When I rescued her, her fur was matted and she shook when I held her. You could see her little ribs sticking out because she was so little -- she only weighed 6 pounds.

She had been in the animal shelter for only a month. I chose her because she sat on my lap without any resistance and buried her head into my chest. She laid on me for at least 20 minutes while all the paperwork was taken care of. I knew as soon as I held her that she was coming home with me.

I brought her home, and she was so absolutely thankful and loving. She was like a new cat. She started grooming herself again, and all the dirt and mats in her hair were gone in just a couple of days.

She happily meows at me every morning to wake me up so that I pay attention to her. I haven’t met very many cats that like to cuddle, but she loves cuddling and being held like a baby.

The vet estimated that she is 8 or 9 years old, based on her teeth. There was no information on her at the shelter, so I was a little worried at first, but she has ended up being a blessing. When my anxiety gets the best of me, I can always pick her up and cuddle her, and she helps me get through it.

I am also a recovering addict. I’ve had to leave a long-term relationship and all of my old friends behind to get better. Koko has taken care of me every step of the way. She has never been aggressive to anybody (she doesn’t like other cats, but she loves people).

She has never tried to run out the door. In fact, she’s absolutely terrified of being outside. She shakes violently every time I bring her outdoors. I’ve let her down in the grass before, and she runs straight to the door to go inside immediately every single time.

She never runs away when people come into the house; she just comes up to say hello. You can grab her unexpectedly and she won’t even flinch or fight at all.

So my Koko is very special. I saved her; now she’s helping to save me. We live in Macedonia with my parents, who also cuddle her and feed her lots of meat and treats. She is about twice the size of what she was when I adopted her (I had to tell my mom to cut down on the amount of treats she gives her).

It’s hard to believe that $25 and a trip to the Twinsburg Humane Society could help to fix my life so much. She really is so special! And I’m not even really a cat person!
