Overflow at lift station prompts water advisory

September 29, 2018

FORT GAY — A boil-water notice was issued by the Fort Gay Water Department because of an overflow at a sewage lift station.

This is a precautionary boil-water notice and is fairly common to the Fort Gay Water Department following heavy rain events.

A release from the department said it hopes to have the issue resolved in the next seven days.

Affected customers are encouraged to bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing and food preparation until further notice.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

According to a release, bacteriological testing of the water supply will be conducted once the sewage overflow has stopped. The test results will take 24 hours to receive once the samples are submitted to the laboratory. Since testing has not yet been done, the company cannot confirm or deny the presence of contamination.

Fort Gay serves a population of approximately 2,300 people.
