COLEBROOK, N.H. (AP) _ A gunman fatally shot two state troopers Tuesday, stole a cruiser and drove to a local newspaper, where he killed a lawyer and critically wounded the managing editor, said a reporter at the scene.

Claire Knapper, a reporter for the weekly News and Sentinel in Colebrook, said one trooper was shot in a cruiser outside a supermarket and the other was shot in a nearby field about 2:45 p.m.

The gunman then sped to the newspaper office in the cruiser. Initial reports had the suspect fleeing the office on foot.

Knapper said she believed the violence began with a robbery at the grocery store.

Colebrook is in the northwestern part of the state, near the Canadian border.
