A different kind of goat

November 8, 2018

When you call someone a goat these days it doesn’t mean the same thing that it used to. It used to mean the animal. Now we have the greatest of all time. Jesus had something to say about goats in the Gospel of Matthew, but not the greatest of all time.

31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.

The ones who don’t miss the mark are rewarded. The ones who do miss the mark receive the consequences of their inactivity. In Matthew 25 verses 41 to 46:

41: “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42: for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

No one is expected to go out and fix every single problem in the world. However, there is an expectation that we care for one another. These aren’t the only ways that we can care for each other, but they are illustrative of how it can be done. It’s actually where The Salvation Army’s red kettles got their start. In San Francisco in 1891 Captain Joseph McFee decided he was going to feed people in need. To get the funds he needed he set out a kettle, based on what he saw in England. The red kettles are a little different after over 125 years, but the goal is the same. Whether it’s by volunteering with The Salvation Army or some other means, don’t be a goat this season.
