Gates Competes in Bridge Tournament
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates put his cards on the table as he played in the final rounds of the North American Bridge Championships.
Microsoft spokesman John Pinette confirmed that Gates was participating Sunday, but said he didn’t know how he had fared.
Gates’ partner, Sharon Osberg of San Francisco, and teammates Sheri Weinstock of Toronto and Howard Weinstein of Chicago just managed to reach the finals on Saturday, garnering a total of 27 points in qualifying sessions. The cutoff score was 26.5.
Although this is the first time he has played in a national championship, Gates is a longtime online bridge player and his performance in the finals has been impressive, tournament officials said.
``Gates has done remarkably well in this tournament,″ said American Contract Bridge League spokesman Michael Calhoun. ``His partners have enjoyed his passion for the game.″
``The game is so deep,″ Gates said in a statement. ``There’s always something you can learn.″
