UOPDATED: Man killed in town of Arlington crash identified

June 9, 2018

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man killed in a single-vehicle crash on County Highway Q in the township of Arlington.

Jonathan M. Koch, 28, of Poynette died at the scene Thursday night, just after 6:30 p.m. when his vehicle, traveling north on County Highway Q, went through the first sharp right of an s-curve, crashing into a tree.

The next day, long after debris had been cleared, a black streak marked a tree trunk that had been stripped of bark among a grove of tall pines.

There were no witnesses or other vehicles on the road at the time of the crash, according to Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lt. Roger Brandner, explaining that the extent of the damage suggested a “high rate of speed.”

“With that said, we are still investigating it,” said Brandner, “and there is some indication that this was a medical emergency before the accident.”

The death is under investigation by the Columbia County Medical Examiner.
