Civic Forum And Greens May Form Coalition
PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia (AP) _ The nation’s leading political movement, Civic Forum, and the environmental Green Party have formed a partnership just days before the election campaign formally begins.
While stopping short of forming a coalition, the groups said they will cooperate as ″representatives of public initiatives not tainted by the political legacy of the past,″ the official CTK news agency said Wednesday.
Sources within Civic Forum said on condition of anonymity that the parties could form a coalition later.
Civic Forum and the Green Party issued a joint communique that called on local party chapters and members to ″pursue ... relations of partnership and cooperation based on the similarity of common objectives.″
Civic Forum led the peaceful popular uprising that toppled the hard-line Communist regime of Milos Jakes last year and is so far the strongest contender heading into the country’s first free elections in four decades.
The campaign formally begins next week for the elections on June 8 and 9.
The Greens, although previously unknown in Czechoslovakia, are also high in the polls with an estimated 11 percent of the population ready to support them.
