NEW YORK (AP) _ Gene Roswell, a longtime sports reporter and columnist at the New York Post, has died at 87.

Roswell died Saturday of respiratory failure stemming from Alzheimer's disease, the newspaper said Sunday.

He covered the New York Jets _ urging the team to start Joe Namath as a rookie _ the New York Giants, the NBA, golf and tennis, among other sports.

Roswell is survived by daughter Alice and sons Jack and Clint, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Sunday in West Palm Beach, Fla.
