SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Phil Johnson, an assistant who helped Arizona to the national championship last season, will become San Jose State's basketball coach, the San Francisco Chronicle and KRON-TV reported today.

The school scheduled a morning news conference to announce a replacement for Stan Morrison, who resigned after nine seasons.

Johnson, 40, spent the past five seasons as an assistant under Lute Olson, and also was an assistant at New Orleans for two years.

The Spartans were 3-23 this season.
