SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Two goals each by Manny Lagos and Ronald Cerritos and shutout goalkeeping by Joe Cannon sparked the San Jose Earthquakes, 4-0 over D.C. United in the MLS on Wednesday night.
The victory moved San Jose into first place in the MLS West with 35 points. The Earthquakes were tied with Los Angeles before Wednesday’s action.
The shutout was Cannon’s sixth of the season.
San Jose is 6-1-4 in its last 11 games and is 10-0-1 when it led at halftime. The Earthquakes have 35 points in 18 games this season, compared to just 29 in last year’s 32-game season.
Lagos boomed a shot from 35 yards into the left corner of the net in the 36th minute, assisted by Wade Barrett.
San Jose took complete control early in the second half by scoring three goals in just 7:25. They made it 2-0 at 48:03 on a 12-yard header by Cerritos into the left corner. DeWayne Rosario got the play started with a nice back pass to Ian Russell, who then guided the ball to Cerritos.
Soon after, at 52:00, the Earthquakes scored again on a strong free kick from the left by Lagos that skipped past diving D.C. United goalkeeper Mark Simpson. Lagos has six goals this season.
Cerritos, San Jose’s leading goal scorer with seven, completed the rout with a penalty kick at 55:28 after being fouled by Chris Albright in the right corner of the penalty area.
