Romanian Soccer Coach Hagi Quits

November 26, 2001

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) _ Gheorghe Hagi resigned Monday as coach of Romania’s soccer team after a dispute with the nation’s soccer federation.

The former Romanian star insisted upon unspecified job security guarantees as he set out to rebuild the team, which failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Romania lost to Slovenia 3-2 earlier this month in a home-and-home playoff for a World Cup berth.

Hagi, 36, led Romania to the 1994 World Cup semifinals and scored 35 goals in 125 international appearances. He was hired as coach in June, replacing Ladislau Boloni, and had a contract than ran until 2004.
