Garth’s Day at Spring Training

March 6, 1999

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Here’s how it went for Garth Brooks on Friday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks played left field in the Padres’ ``B″ game, an 8-2 loss to the Anaheim Angels. He went 0-for-3, with a pair of groundouts to second base and a fly ball that was just shy of the warning track in center field. He’s now 0-for-8 in two intrasquad games, one ``A″ game and one ``B″ game.

HIGH NOTE: Brooks filmed a spot for Joe Garagiola’s anti-spit tobacco campaign. Garagiola said Brooks has credibility because he has friends in music, baseball and down on the farm, not to mention the ones he sings about in low places. ``He gave me chills with the last one,″ Garagiola said after one of the takes.

ON THE RECORD: ``Hey, everybody, I’m Garth Brooks. If somebody tells you dipping or chewing tobacco is not harmful or possibly fatal, they ain’t telling you the truth.″ _ one of the lines Brooks recited for Garagiola’s public-service announcement.
