October 4, 2018

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Former U.S. secretary of defense and CIA director Leon Panetta is receiving a prestigious award at the U.S. Military Academy.

Panetta will be at West Point Thursday to receive the Thayer Award. The Corps of Cadets will parade in the former California congressman’s honor at 5 p.m. before the award presentation.

The 80-year-old Democrat held high-ranking posts during the Obama administration.

Recipients of the Thayer Award are chosen by West Point’s Association of Graduates. The annual award is given to citizens whose service in the national interest reflects the academy’s motto of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Former President George W. Bush received the award last year and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, received it in 1994.

Past Thayer Award recipients include Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Henry Kissinger and Neil Armstrong.
