Hall of Fame Horse Trainer Dies
BAL HARBOUR, Fla. (AP) _ Hall of Fame trainer William James ``Buddy″ Hirsch died Saturday following a long illness. He was 88.
During nearly six decades in racing, Buddy Hirsch trained many stakes winners and several champions, among them Gallant Bloom and Canonero II. He won over 1,000 races and more than $15 million in purses.
He was the son of Max Hirsch, who went into the Hall of Fame in 1959 after training three Kentucky Derby winners and one Triple Crown winner.
Hirsch is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandy, two sons, a daughter and a sister. Burial will be private at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, N.Y.
