‘Outcasts’ canceled due to cold

January 30, 2019

The showing of documentary “Outcasts” has fallen victim to the brutal cold which has hit the community.

The planned 7 p.m. Thursday program at Bishop McNamara Catholic High School in Kankakee was canceled Tuesday afternoon.

Michelle Barrie, who was coordinating the event, said an alternative date will be found, but that has not been determined at this point.

The 60-minute documentary features the work of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The order includes Father Giles Maria Barrie, a son of Ken and Michelle Barrie of St. Anne.

Although Father Giles is not part of the documentary, other than a brief glimpse of him in one scene, the 1998 graduate of McNamara has been part of the religious order since 2017.

“Outcasts” was the winner of the Justice Film Festival’s 2017 Best Justice Film Award. The documentary was produced by Grassroots Films Inc.

The order serves the homeless. In addition to providing food through its soup kitchen, the order evangelizes to those living on the streets. Barrie has been serving with the order in Bradford, England, since August 2017. Previously, he was with the order in Harlem, N.Y.
