Country music legend Willie Nelson will headline a concert in Austin for U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke in late September, the latest celebrity endorsement for the Democratic El Paso congressman running against Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.
Though Nelson has played for pols before, the September 29 concert at Auditorium Shores marks the first time Nelson has performed on behalf of a political candidate, according to Rolling Stone magazine.
The rally will also feature performances by Joe Ely, Tameca Jones and Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah.
Nelson announced the show on Wednesday along with a statement: “My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed,” it says. “Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine.”
Tickets are available through O’Rourke’s campaign website, where an invite to the free event starts like this: “If we’re going to win and elect Beto to the Senate, we need Texans to vote for him! And what’s more Texan than Willie Nelson? (Nothing!)”
Nelson and O’Rourke have shared a stage before. O’Rourke, who plays guitar, accepted an invitation to jam with Nelson at Willie’s Fourth of July Picnic two months ago.
