Pitt basketball season opens Friday night on Bigelow Boulevard

Opportunities to meet rapper Doug E. Fresh, win $1,000 toward the Pitt University Store and meet Pitt’s men’s and women’s basketball players and coaches await fans Friday night at Courtside at the Cathedral, the unofficial opening of the basketball season.

Doors open at 7 p.m. on Bigelow Boulevard, player introductions begin at 8, with fireworks and laser show at 9.

Among the scheduled events is a dunk contest, featuring players Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Shamiel Stevenson. Judges for the event are former Pitt players Bobby Martin and Ronald Ramon, Doug E. Fresh, Roberto Clemente Jr. and reigning dunk champion and current men’s player Malik Ellison.

Five students will be a part of the festivities, including four who will participate in the shooting stars competition. The pairings will be men’s and women’s players Kene Chukwuka/Jasmine Whitney, Khameron Davis/Cassidy Walsh, Au’Diese Toney/Danielle Garven and Jared Wilson-Frame/Alayna Gribble.
