Thanks to those beyond the scenes
I’ve often used this space during the week leading up to Thanksgiving to share some words of thanks and appreciation.
Some years, I’ve focused on my talented and hard-working colleagues here at the Daily News.
In other years, I have chosen to identify by name some individuals who have done something worthy of praise.
This year, something a bit different but no less important or significant — offering words of thanks to those who may never be identified.
I would like to make use of this space this year to thank:
— The individuals who took the time to submit nominations for the 2018 Norfolk Area Person of the Year recognition program.
There are any number of individuals deserving of this kind of accolade. Almost all of them wouldn’t even think of nominating themselves or asking someone to submit a nomination form. As a result, there undoubtedly are individuals worthy of recognition who slip through the cracks each year. That’s why it’s so important for others to take the time to submit a nomination.
So, thanks to all those who did.
— In the same vein, I’m grateful for customers or employees of businesses that took it upon themselves to submit nominations for the 2018 Norfolk Area Business Hall of Fame.
There are so many local and area firms deserving of this kind of recognition, too, but, again, it takes a nomination for it to become a reality.
— Also deserving of thanks are the many firefighters, first-responders, EMTs and law enforcement officers who sometimes are included in Daily News photographs at accident scenes but rarely identified. Generally speaking, they prefer it that way. But just because they may not get their names included in photograph captions, that doesn’t in any way lessen their importance.
— I’m also appreciative of the staff members who work largely behind the scenes for public officials. Their bosses are in the spotlight regularly (even if they might prefer that not to be the case). But it’s the work of staff members who help those elected officials solve problems, share information and keep the public informed.
— Here at the Daily News, many newsroom staff members get their names published through story bylines or photograph credits.
But that’s not the case for many of the individuals who work in other departments. Yet everyone is needed to publish a quality newspaper and online offerings on a daily basis.
And I’m especially appreciative of the route drivers and newspaper carriers who help ensure that our printed product reaches subscribers and readers on a timely basis.
What this all means is that there are so many people deserving of thanks and gratefulness if only we take the time to look around us.
Here’s hoping that all of Northeast and North Central Nebraska has a happy Thanksgiving, and that we take time to express our appreciation.
