IN THE NEWS: UBER CLEARED IN FIRST-EVER U.S. DEATH INVOLVING SELF-DRIVING CAR
PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — Uber is apparently off the hook when it comes to blame for the first fatality in the U.S. involving a self-driving vehicle. A prosecutor in Arizona has determined that the ride-sharing company isn’t criminally liable in a crash in which a self-driving Uber SUV struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was struck in the town of Tempe (tem-PEE’). What remains unclear is whether prosecutors will consider charges against the driver in the March 18 crash. The driver told investigators that she didn’t use her cellphone before the crash. But authorities had said records showed she was streaming the television show “The Voice” on her phone and was looking downward in the moments before the crash.

ON THE WEB: ONE OF THE INVENTORS OF THE HANDHELD CALCULATOR DIES
CYBERSPACE (AP) — If you have ever spelled out the word “HELLO” using a hand-held calculator held upside, you have Jerry Merryman to thank for that. He was one of three men who, while working at Texas Instruments, invented hand-held devices that tally numbers — and were a staple of students and business before use of computers, smartphones and tablets became common. Merryman’s stepdaughter says the calculator co-designer has died in Dallas. He was 86 — and had heart and kidney failure.
