Central Michigan 13, Toledo 12
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) _ Jeff Bender threw a pair of touchdown passes and a late field goal attempt fell short as Central Michigan held on to defeat previously unbeaten Toledo 13-12 in a Mid-American Conference game Saturday.
The victory gave the Chippewas (6-1-1 overall, 5-0 in the conference) sole possession of the MAC lead. Toledo (6-1, 5-1) had entered the game as one of six unbeaten, untied teams in NCAA Division I-A. It was Central Michigan’s first victory over Toledo since a 34-6 triumph in 1983.
Bender’s touchdown pass plays went for 53 yards to Ken Ealy in the first quarter and 38 yards to Bob Kench in the third period. The latter score made it 13-12, but an attempt for a two-point conversion failed.
Toledo had a chance to win the game when Rusty Hanna attempted a 51-yard field goal with four seconds to play. But the kick, into winds clocked at between 15 and 20 mph, went to the side. Hanna’s field goals of 28, 46, 41 and 26 yards accounted for all the Rockets’ points.
Central Michigan’s Rich Curtiss had a part in 21 tackles, 11 solo and 10 assisted, two short of the school record.
