Injured Tina Weirather out of Olympic downhill

February 11, 2014

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — Tina Weirather says she’s out of the Olympic women’s downhill because of an injury sustained after a training crash.

Weirather writes that she is “heart broken that I cant compete tomorrow” in a post on her social network accounts.

The Liechtenstein racer was an expected medal contender after four top-three finishes in seven World Cup downhills this season.

She announced her decision 30 minutes after she was included in the draw for starting bib numbers.

Weirather injured her right tibia after crashing early in a training run on Sunday.

She says “I always felt responsible for my crashes and injuries, but this time I feel like it was just bad luck.”

Weirather says she’s “hoping for a miracle” to be ready for Saturday’s super-G medal race.
