Names In The Game
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The Capital City Bombers are giving Tim Bishop’s parents the retired jersey of their late teammate. Come September, the New York Mets’ South Atlantic League team hopes to give the Bishops a ring.
``Tim wanted to win a championship. Now we want to win one for him,″ Bombers outfielder Jeramie Simpson said Sunday as club retired the No. 4 worn by Bishop before he was killed in a weekend auto accident.
Bishop and teammate Randy Vickers were driving home early Saturday when a blown tire caused them to hit the center divider. Both players walked away, but Bishop returned to turn on the hazard lights.
Another vehicle then struck the car, throwing Bishop into the eastbound lane, where the outfielder was struck by another car.
``This is a tragedy for the entire New York Mets family,″ Mets general manager Joe McIlvaine said Saturday. ``Our prayers go out to the Bishop family, Tim’s friends and his teammates in Columbia.″
Bishop will be buried Wednesday in his hometown of Valpariaso, Ind. He will be buried in a Mets uniform, courtesy of the big-league club.
PARIS, Texas (AP) _ Former Alabama football coach Gene Stallings underwent hip surgery Sunday after he was trampled by three horses.
``I’ll probably be here four or five days,″ Stallings told the Mobile Register from his room at St. Joseph’s Hospital. ``I’m probably looking at a couple months of rehabilitation. But I’ll be fine.″
The accident occurred around 7 a.m. Sunday when Stallings, 62, went out to care for the horses he keeps on his 600-acre ranch.
``I was just feeding them and they were playing around,″ Stallings said. ``They wanted to get to that feed.″
Stallings coached Alabama to a 70-16-1 record from 1990-96, and his 1992 team captured the national championship with a 34-13 victory over Miami in the Sugar Bowl. He retired after last season.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) _ ``Borje’s brew″ is selling so poorly in Sweden that the state-owned liquor stores are taking the former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman’s Canadian import off the shelves for good.
Borje Salming’s import _ Upper Canada Lager _ was a success when the Hall of Famer started importing the micro brew to his native Sweden in 1992.
But the market has been flooded with hundreds of imports and domestic micro brews in the last few years that hurt the sales, according to a published report this weekend.
