Gallery Adds To Pittston’s Arts Scene

PITTSTON — Pittston has a new arts center.

Art e Fekts Gallery held its grand opening in the city’s downtown Nov. 17.

The co-op art gallery, which is owned by the Greater Pittston Land Revitalization Corporation, is a place for regional artists to display and sell their creations and for people to take art classes. A board of directors runs the gallery, at 71 S. Main St., and a jury selects the pieces for display inside.

Drawing and painting classes as well as lectures and other events are coming in 2019. A class in which participants make bath bombs and body scrubs is scheduled for Dec. 30 of this year.

Gallery organizers are looking into scheduling more classes for next year in a variety of mediums, including photography, origami and children’s artwork, said executive director Mary Kroptavich.

The city has developed an active arts scene, complete with murals and public sculptures as well as a series of art walks in warmer weather.

“This is another piece to the puzzle,” Kroptavich said.

Artists who want to display their work can join as an associate or consigner. Consigners pay $25 per month for their artwork to appear in the gallery, and associates volunteer eight hours each month. Artists also give a portion of commissions to the gallery. Showroom organizers are looking for more people who are interested in showing their work, and prospective artists can find information at www.artefekts.com.

Gallery organizers also plan to add a gift shop to the back of the building. The shop will sell things like candles, jewelry, lip balms, handmade soaps and other gifts. The gallery also hopes to offer an indoor alternative to the city’s art walks in colder months.

Arts e Fekts Gallery is in a space that previously held the Art on Main, where Maria Livrone and Bill Zack displayed their work. Livrone and Zack have moved, but not far. They are in a studio on Wharf Street in Pittston, the small street behind the gallery, and planning new two-dimensional and three-dimensional aluminum artwork.
