Utah prison population drops while re-admissions increase
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new state report says Utah’s prison population is down but more people are returning to prison for offenses and violations while on parole and probation.
The Deseret News reports that Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice data released Friday shows an 11 percent drop in the prison population since 2015 while parole and probation re-admissions have increased by 39 percent and 43 percent, respectively.
The commission’s reports the prison population is 18 percent less than was projected without sweeping criminal justice changes made in 2015.
Those changes included steps intended to reduce recidivism, offer treatment for drug offenders and provide more prison housing for serious and violent criminals.
Violent offenders in the prison population now make up 68 percent of all inmates, up from 60 percent in 2015.
