Danbury Football Tieri honored
The excitement around the Danbury football program continues to grow, this time with a prestigious award from a familiar name.
Head coach Augustine Tieri was named New York Jets High School Coach of the Week, an award sponsored by Gatorade. The Hatters beat Westhill 52-20 last week to improve to 2-1 in Tieri’s first season at the school.
Tieri will be honored at halftime of the Jets’ final home game of the 2018 season against the Green Bay Packers on December 23.
“I was definitely surprised,” Tieri said. “I’m very appreciative for being recognized by the New York Jets. … Obviously it’s a reflection of all the hard work from the entire coaching staff.”
Tieri’s classroom is usually the hub for his players once the final period bell has rung, and that scene was a little more energetic as the congratulations came in. As part of the award Gatorade donated $2,000 to the team, which will field alternate jerseys later in the season.
“They all came in and barraged me after school,” Tieri said. “As much as it’s an honor for me it’s a team award and it’s symbol of the hard work that they all put in. … it was a team-orientated celebration.”
The Hatters hope to move to 3-1 Friday when Capital Prep/Achievement (1-2) makes the trip to Danbury. Capital Prep won the matchup 40-22 last season.
“I thought we had a great week of practice,” Tieri said. “The week before we didn’t let the lull of that loss (to New Canaan) get to us and we (stayed level) after (beating Westhill). We take things a week at a time as vigilantly as we can to get ready for this.”
