Painful Loss on Diamond for Hawks
VESTAL, N.Y. — The UMass Lowell baseball team was staring at a 2-0 start to the America East Championships.
After a three-run top of the eighth inning, the River Hawks led Stony Brook, 6-2. But Stony Brook (29-21) hit two solo homers as part of a three-run bottom of the eighth and then Chris Hamilton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Kendall Pomeroy to lift Stony Brook to a dramatic 7-6 win.
UMass Lowell (20-35), which opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Maine, played Hartford in a late game with its season on the line.
Stony Brook held an 11-8 hits advantage. The game was delayed 1 hour and 15 minutes due to rain and lightning.
