COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Top seeds Duke and Virginia advanced to the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Columbia, South Carolina. Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett scored 25 points apiece in the Blue Devils’ 85-62 rout of North Dakota State, and De’Andre Hunter led the Cavs with 23 points in the Cavaliers’ 71-56 win against Gardner-Webb. Also at Columbia, Rashard Odomes and Christian James scored 20 points apiece in Oklahoma’s 95-72 pounding of Mississippi, and Tacko Fall had 10 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks as ninth-seeded UCF beat VCU, 73-58.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Cameron Johnson scored 21 points and top seed North Carolina had to rally from a five-point, halftime deficit to beat Iona, 88-73 in NCAA Tournament action at Columbus. Noah Dickerson had 20 points and 12 rebounds in guiding Washington past Utah State, 78-61. Tennessee was a 77-70 winner against Colgate behind Admiral Schofield’s 19 points, and Luke Garza delivered 20 points in Iowa’s 79-72 decision over seventh seed Cincinnati.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Caleb Homesley scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half and Lovell Cabbil hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:16 to play to send 12th-seeded Liberty to an 80-76 over fifth-seeded Mississippi State in the NCAA Tournament. No. 13 UC Irvine got back-to-back 3-pointers from Evan Leonard to spark the deciding run in a 70-64 upset over Kansas State. Also at San Jose, Payton Pritchard scored 19 points in Oregon’s 72-54 stifling of Wisconsin, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 20 points as part of Virginia Tech’s 66-52 win against Saint Louis.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Jarrett Culver’s 29 points eight rebounds and seven assists carried Texas Tech to a 72-57 victory over No. 14 Northern Kentucky in the Tulsa section of the NCAA Tournament. Corey Davis knocked in 26 points to help Houston hammer Georgia State, 84-55. Kaleb Wesson had 21 points and 12 rebounds in Ohio State’s 62-59 triumph against Iowa State, and Jeremy Harris and Nick Perkins each had 21 points and 10 rebounds to highlight Buffalo’s 91-74 romp over Arizona State.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The worst season in the history of Vanderbilt men’s basketball has cost coach Bryce Drew his job. Vanderbilt went 9-23 and was the first team in 65 years to go winless in the Southeastern Conference. Drew went 40-59 record in three seasons with the Commodores.
