December 21, 2003

SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Brian Buchanan agreed Saturday to a $650,000, one-year contract with the San Diego Padres.

Buchanan, 30, hit .263 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 115 games during his second full season with the Padres. He started 38 games, including 19 at first base, 17 in the outfield and two as a designated hitter.

In addition to his salary, he can earn $100,000 in performance bonuses.

The Padres acquired Buchanan from Minnesota for shortstop Jason Bartlett on July 12, 2002. Over four seasons, Buchanan has a .264 average with 30 homers and 97 RBIs in 306 games.

San Diego also declined to offer 2004 contracts to infielder Todd Sears, catcher Miguel Ojeda and left-hander Mike Matthews, making them free agents.

Sears, 28, was used mostly as a pinch hitter last season, appearing in nine games and batting .250.

Ojeda, 32, appeared in 61 games, batting .234 with four homers and 22 RBIs.

Matthews, 30, was 6-4 with a 4.45 ERA and made 77 relief appearances, fourth-most in Padres history.
