Regarding ‘right-wing antipathy to Palestinians’

September 26, 2018

Apparently writer Stephan Lesher (Letter to the Editor, Sept. 14) is privy to historical facts concerning the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 that are unknown to the rest of us. The truth is that Israel invaded no one.

According to every reputable historical source, the facts are that on May 15, 1948, one day after Israel declared formal statehood, a coalition of Arab forces consisting mainly of armies from Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Jordan, invaded the newly formed nation, their stated intent being to destroy the nascent state, and presumably murder or at the very least drive out the entire Jewish population.

Israel’s apparent crime was that it fought tooth and nail to defend itself, and in the end prevailed. The Arabs, rather than make their peace, decided that constant agitation and belligerence, which continues to this day, would be the better plan.

Whatever unfortunate circumstances the Palestinian people suffered because of that war, and just as unfortunately continue to suffer should be laid squarely at the feet of those Arab nations, and their leaders, past and present that brought it about, and continue to use the Palestinians as pawns in their political ambitions, not on Israel, which only sought to defend itself from invasion.

Lastly to compare or even suggest that Israel behaves like South Africa did in the worst days of apartheid is reprehensible, shows a disturbing disregard for the truth and has no basis in fact.
