Chittenden County loses at least 5 farmers’ markets
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s most populous county has lost at least five farmers’ markets in the last five years.
The Burlington Free Press reports that the reasons vary, but for some there was a lack of interest by vendors and residents. In other cases, problems included shortages of parking, locations and volunteers to run the market.
Some Chittenden County town officials say too many markets also may have played a role, creating competition for vendors.
Farmers’ markets have dissolved in Colchester, Essex Junction, Hinesburg, South Burlington and Westford.
But plans have been revived for a farmers’ market in Essex Town and one in Williston.
