Agassi Advances to USTA Semifinals
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Fifth-seeded Andre Agassi was fined the maximum $1,000 for swearing at the chair umpire during a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over unseeded Brian MacPhie of San Jose, Calif, in the quarterfinals of the Luxor Las Vegas-USTA Men’s Challenger tournament Friday.
Agassi, ranked No. 141 in the world, yelled an obscenity at Norm Chryst of Phoenix, after the veteran chair umpire overruled a call on the baseline to give MacPhie, ranked No. 200, a game and tie their second set at 3-3.
The obscenity was audible throughout the 2,200-seat stadium at UNLV.
The lines woman had called MacPhie’s shot long, but Chryst ruled that it was good.
Agassi could have been defaulted for the offense, said tournament supervisor Keith Crossland.
Agassi will meet top-seeded Grant Stafford of South Africa in Saturday’s semifinals.
Stafford, ranked No. 77, edged unseeded Jan-Michael Gambill 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7) in the quarterfinals.
In the other semifinal, third-seeded Geoff Grant will face unseeded Christian Vinck of Germany.
