Two Die in Pa. Apartment Fire
SHARPSBURG, Pa. (AP) _ Flames swept through a three-story apartment building early Thursday, killing two people including a woman who jumped from a window to escape the fire.
Nine others, including three firefighters, were injured, Allegheny County Fire Marshal Robert Full said.
People jumped from as high as third-story windows into garbage bins to escape, witnesses told radio station KQV. One woman broke her neck and died from the fall.
The firefighters were injured when the ladder they were using to rescue a man on the third floor collapsed, KQV said.
Seven people were treated and released from UPMC-St. Margaret’s hospital in Aspinwall. One person was transferred to another hospital and a firefighter admitted with a broken back was in fair condition, spokeswoman Julie Tarle said.
The fire at 12:30 a.m. gutted the brick apartment building and damaged a half-block row of buildings, said Richard Siwicki, manager of a building across the street.
