Devil Rays Place Eiland on DL
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed pitcher Dave Eiland on the disabled list with left hip bursitis Friday and recalled reliever Alan Newman from Triple-A Durham.
Eiland, 4-7 with a 5.48 ERA, left Thursday’s game against the Chicago White Sox in the third inning with hip soreness. The stint on the DL is the second of the season for the right-hander, who missed part of June because of lower back stiffness.
Eiland had won three of his past five starts, getting his first victories in consecutive decisions for the first time since September 1990 with the New York Yankees.
Newman, a left-handed reliever, has been with the Devil Rays on four different occasions this season, going 1-2 with a 10.13 ERA in six games.
