Football | Tigers top Panthers for homecoming win
STEWARTVILLE — Pine Island’s Josh Navratil was the best player on the field Friday as the Panthers went on the road to face Stewartville in a Southeast District, Red Sub-District contest.
The bruising running back mashed the Tigers’ defense for 251 yards on 21 carries, but Stewartville did a good job of minimizing the damage, allowing Navratil just one touchdown as the Tigers claimed a hard-fought 29-22 victory on Homecoming night.
It was a back-and-forth contest, and it started with a wild first quarter.
Stewartville struck first when Will Tschetter hit Hunter Voigt for a 5-yard TD pass, but the Panthers responded with a 22-yard TD strike from Carter O’Reilly to Logan Andrist. Navratil bulled in for the two-point conversion, and Pine Island led 8-7.
Tschetter then connected with Nathan Johnson for a 54-yard TD to put Stewartville up 14-8, but O’Reilly found Andrist for another score, this time a 10-yarder, as Pine Island claimed a 15-14 lead.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Tigers regained the lead when Tschetter found Hunter Voigt for a 16-yard TD, putting Stewartville up 22-15.
Navratil responded with a 72-yard TD run to tie the game at 22, setting the stage for Stewartville’s Josh Buri to get the game-winning score, a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Buri rushed for 143 yards on 24 carries.
Pine Island had 401 total yards and 18 first downs, while Stewartville had 326 yards and 15 first downs. Pine Island committed two turnovers, while the Tigers had none.
