Mets (ss) 7, Yankees 6
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Potential closer Xavier Hernandez allowed three runs in the eighth inning, and a split squad of New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 7-6 Sunday.
Brook Fordyce, Tim Bogar and Doug Dascenzo had run-scoring hits off Hernandez, whom the Yankees acquired in the offseason from Houston. The Yankees had tied the score 4-4 on Daryl Boston’s two-run homer off eventual winner Mike Remlinger in the seventh.
But Hernandez quickly fell into trouble in losing his debut. With one out, Jeromy Burnitz drew a walk and stole second. Jeff Manto also walked before Fordyce and Bogar hit singles and Dascenzo capped the rally with an RBI double.
Remlinger gained the victory despite yielding three runs in two innings.
Ex-Yankee Kenny Greer earned the save although he permitted a run in the ninth. Greer escaped a jam when Tate Seefried popped to right with runners at first and second for the final out.
