Man charged in deadly Richmond Heights shooting in argument over woman

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio — A Bedford man is accused of fatally shooting a 30-year-old man after the two got into an argument over a woman.

Steven Malone, 35, is charged with murder in the early Sunday death of Benjamin Sims.

Malone is being held in the Euclid Jail awaiting his first appearance in Lyndhurst Municipal Court. A court date has not yet been set.

The shooting happened about 3:45 a.m. at the Dorchester Apartment buildings on Ruth Ellen Drive, north of Chardon Road.

An argument broke out between the two men outside the building. The men argued over Sims’ ex-girlfriend and Malone’s current girlfriend, police said.

The argument turned into a fight. Sims eventually got in his car and Malone went to his own car, got a gun and fired several shots at Sims.

Sims crashed into several parked cars and a tree, according to police reports.

Richmond Heights police went to the scene after people reported hearing gunshots and screaming, according to the police report.

Richmond Heights, Willoughby Hills and Highland Heights police all responded. Officers found Sims, 30, dead inside his car.

Malone remained at the apartment building, put his gun on the ground and surrendered to officers as they arrived, according to the police report.
