Paralyzed Officer’s Condition Improves, Wife Says

July 19, 1986

NEW YORK (AP) _ A 29-year-old police officer, paralyzed from the neck down by a teen-age gunman’s bullet, surprised doctors and his family by responding to stimuli during tests conducted by neurosurgeons.

″Every day he’s looking better and better and his spirit, it’s just remarkable,″ said Patti Ann McDonald of her husband Steven, 29. ″He’s as handsome as ever.″

She said there was movement in her husband’s body for the first time since he was shot in the spine July 12 in Central Park, but hospital officials declined to elaborate on McDonald’s neurological responses.

Shavod Jones, 15, indicted Friday on attempted murder charges, will be tried as an adult and faces up to 10 years imprisonment if convicted, police said.

He was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to a robbery charge earlier this year, authorities said.
