Five Killed in Natural-Gas Explosion at a Bar

October 17, 1994

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) _ A fiery explosion Monday morning demolished a bar that served breakfast to night-shift factory workers, killing five people and injuring three.

Fire Chief Frank Magsamen blamed the blast at Buzz’s Bar on a buildup of natural gas.

″I saw a huge ball of fire and I saw kindling all around where the fireball was. It went right straight up about 100 feet,″ said Sam Annis, whose neighboring business was damaged.

Seven people were in the bar at the time; one of the two people injured inside the place was listed in critical condition.

The third person injured was in an adjoining building.

The bar is near a Deere & Co. plant.
