T-birds finish second in Lake Havasu
BULLHEAD CITY — The Mohave High School T-birds swim team returned to Bullhead City from its meet in Lake Havasu City with a second-place finish.
The Lake Havasu High School Knights tallied 98 points to win the swimming match at the Lake Havasu Aquatic Center on Saturday.
The Mohave High School Lady T-birds placed first with 56 points in the girls competition, and the Mohave T-birds came in second at 35 in the boys competition.
“We’re closing the gap,” said T-birds head coach Ed Catalfamo by cell phone. “All of the kids have been working really hard.
“They were — at the beginning of the season — (Lake Havasu) beat us by quite a bit. It was by over 100 points or something.”
Lake Havasu’s girls placed first at 49, and the Lake Havasu boys came in second at 49. The Kofa High School boys finished third at 26 and the Kofa girls placed third at five.
Kofa finished third in the team results at 31.
Catalfamo said his Lady T-birds have been really stepping it up. He added sophomore Madeline MacDonald, senior Mikayla Barton and junior Nick Cabanillas have been swimming exceptionally well for his squad.
“It’s his first year,” said Catalfamo about Cabanillas. “He’s really coming on. He’s made it to the ‘A’ relay, medley relay and 250 freestyle relay.”
MacDonald and Barton have been stalwarts for the entire season for the Lady T-birds.
When Catalfamo was told that his two Lady T-bird stalwarts are money in the bank, he said, “Yeah, I can put them anywhere and they’ll do really well.”
The T-birds will host their last home meet of the year at 4 p.m. today at the BHC Municipal Swimming Pool.
