Air handling, lighting upgrades in schools to be finished this month

September 7, 2018

NEEDLES — The entire project of installing HVAC (air conditioning, heating and ventilation) units and lighting throughout the district is scheduled to be finished by Sept. 28, stated Mary McNeil, Ph.d., Needles Unified School District superintendent.

“They are moving very quickly because they understand our air conditioning issues and my urgency to get all of this done,” said McNeil. “We are still on track with the 13 air conditioners at the Needles High School, two at Chemeuve Elementary School, four at Needles Middle School and one at Vista Colorado Elementary School (VCES). I did request four HVAC units to be placed on a rush order so they can be installed at the gymnasium.”

In order for the work to be completed and not disrupt classes all of the work is to begin after school hours and continue on weekends.

The lighting and control work was to take 13 days at the high school, finishing Aug. 22; seven days at Vista, from Aug. 20 to Aug. 28; four days at the middle school, from Aug. 28 to Aug. 31; four days at the administrative building, from Sept. 4 to Sept. 7; three days at Katie Hohstadt/Head Start, from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6; and two days at CES, from Sept. 10 to Sept. 11.

The HVAC improvements are to take seven days at the high school from Aug. 31 to Sept. 10; two days at the middle school from Sept. 14 to 17; two days at Vista, from Sept. 14 to Sept. 17; four days at Big River Elementary School, from Sept. 18 to Sept. 21; and two days at CES, from Sept. 21 to Sept. 24.

“I did include information about the new thermostats,” said McNeil. “With the new thermostats the teacher will be able to control what they want their room temperature to be within a two degree range. Since 74 to 80 degrees will be the standard, if they want it decreased it can go down to 72 or increased to 82 degrees.”

The NUSD is funding the $998,771 improvements through Proposition 39 (The California Clean Energy Jobs Act), guaranteed savings and Route Restricted Maintenance Account (RRMA).
