EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Roy Lassiter scored the only goal of the match two minutes into the second half to lift D.C. United to a 1-0 victory tonight against the New York-New Jersey MetroStars.

The game-winning goal came moments after Lassiter had just missed wide left following a cross from Jaime Moreno.

Moreno set the winning goal in motion when he passed to Marco Etcheverry just beyond the midfield stripe. Etcheverry then split the MetroStars' defense with a seeing-eye pass that put Lassiter in alone on goalkeeper Mike Ammann.

The United striker carried the ball inside the box before slipping a left-footed shot past Ammann into the right corner for his third goal of the season.

The MetroStars had two chances to score in the second half, but Eduardo Hurtado's shot in the 63rd minute hit off the left post and Hurtado's shot from the top of the box in the 73rd minute whistled wide right.

A red card to midfielder Billy Walsh in the 65th minute further diminished the MetroStars' chances.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie with neither team having a significant advantage. With a little more than eight minutes to play the MetroStars Mike Duhaney collided with United keeper Tom Presthus after Presthus had punched away a cross by Miles Joseph.

Both players fell to the ground with Presthus bleeding from the head and Duhaney from the nose. After a brief delay during which both players received medical attention, both continued in the match with Presthus receiving nine stitches at the half.
