Shirley Prison Locked Down After Inmates Attack Officers
From staff and news service reports
SHIRLEY -- A group of inmates attacked corrections officers at a Massachusetts maximum-security prison earlier this week, leaving six officers injured and the prison on lockdown.
The attack at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center on Monday at 11:38 a.m. was caught on surveillance video that was released by the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
The video from the K2 housing unit shows an inmate approach the officer station and then attack the officer before other inmates join the assault.
Several inmates are seen punching and kicking an officer. Other officers eventually respond to the attack.
A Department of Correction spokesman said six officers were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, and one was under concussion protocol.
Six inmates have been removed from the unit and the matter remains under investigation.
Inmates involved in this incident will face internal discipline and the district attorney has been notified. Internally, DOC will issue disciplinary reports that could lead to sanctions based on involvement in the incident.
The prison remained on lockdown Friday -- which involves restricted movement within the facility.
NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez was serving a life sentence in a killing when he hanged himself in 2017 at the prison.
