List of Bridgeport’s 2019 homicides
1. Jan. 14.
Razzie Hancock, 39, was fatally stabbed in side of the chest with a kitchen knife following a dispute with by another man over the affections of a woman. Kenyon Gay, 41, of West Haven, was charged with murder, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree assault.
Police said both Gay and the victim had been in a relationship with the woman, Gay for nine years and Hancock for eight months.
2. Jan. 26
Eugene Rogers, 50, was found lying on the ground, motionless on Reservoir Avenue. He was bleeding from a bullet wound in his head, and police said he had a silver and black gun in his left hand.
Police went to the scene after 9 a.m. by the Bridgeport Police Department’s Shot Spotter system to the Citgo gas station and Pitt Stop convenience store on Reservoir Avenue.
Jayvell Washington, was charged that same day with Rogers’s death. Washington and members of the Rogers family have been engaged in a violent series of confrontations since the summer of 2017, according to police. That year, Washington shot Rogers twice in the abdomen. Rogers recovered from that shooting and Washington was charged with his attempted murder.
3. Jan. 27.
Eric Salters, 28, of New Haven, was shot multiple times around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. He later died on Feb. 4. He was shot near the New England Tractor Trailer Training School at 510 Barnum Ave., where he was a student. Police said it appears that when Salters went to his car during class, he was confronted by a gunman, who opened fire on him. Salters was hit multiple times, including once in the head, police said
The the motive for the shooting was unclear.
4. Feb. 5.
Sujata Lee Edwards, 36, died after being shot through a second story window in her residence on William Street. Edwards was shot as she looked out the second-floor window while her 17-year-old daughter was walking to the teen’s father’s car.
Llesha O’Connor. Edwards’ motherm, said her daughter’s two children were with their mother when Edwards was gunned down. There had been a fight outside the home earlier in the evening, involving Edwards’ son and an ex-girlfriend who brought a large group of people with her, O’Connor said. Once the fight ended, the group left, she said.
But the family suspects they came back later, armed.
Edwards was shot at least once in the torso.
5. Feb. 11.
Dyshon Williams, 19, was found dead on a city sidewalk about two hours after a call came in to a computerized system that shots had been fired in the area. The Cowles Street resident was shot around 10:45 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead after police found him roughly two hours later on Boston Avenue.
Police said Williams was shot in his vehicle and apparently staggered away before he collapsed, police said.
Williams died from a single gunshot wound to the torso “with penetration to the neck,” according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
6. March 5.
Jerrell Gatewood, 34, of Bridgeport, was shot in the area of Connecticut Avenue and Fifth Street around 9:40 a.m. Years before the fatal shooting, Gatewood was shot in the chest on Sept. 8, 2013, while working on his car on Connecticut Avenue. An acquaintance brought him to Bridgeport Hospital. A day after that 2013 shooting, he was in stable condition at the hospital.
Police Chief Armando Perez said Tuesday detectives are looking into the 2013 shooting as part of Gatewood’s homicide investigation.
7. March 10
A 21-year-old man was killed and two others wounded after 20 rounds of bullets were fired into a car on Hollister Avenue.
According to police, shortly before 7:30 p.m., shots were fired at the vehicle in the area of 533 Hollister Ave., with at least three people inside. Three men, aged 17, 21 and 22, were hit by gunfire.
The 21-year-old man fatally shot has not been identfied.
