Pet Cat Credited For Saving Six But Dies In Fire

February 9, 1987

FREDONIA, Wis. (AP) _ A pet cat named Puff woke its owners up in the middle of the night to warn them of a fast-moving fire, saving six people but failing to get out alive itself.

The 11-year-old cat scratched on the bedroom door of Garfield and Carol Briemon, whose home was destroyed in the early-morning fire on Sunday.

″If it wasn’t for that cat ... they had no time to get out of there,″ said Robert Mueller, the couple’s son-in-law.

The body of the 11-year-old cat was found charred by the fire, which was fueled by winds up to 50 mph.

Kim Mueller, the Briemons’ daughter, said her mother was awakened and irritated by the cat’s scratching.

″She opened the door and couldn’t believe it. The flames were right in front of her,″ Mrs. Mueller said.

She said her mother shouted to three of her children and a niece sleeping upstairs, and the four ran out through the kitchen door.

″As soon as they got to the door, they saw the roof cave in behind them,″ Mrs. Mueller said.

The parents escaped through a window. No one was seriously injured. The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined, said Waubeka Fire Chief Thomas Bublitz.
