Donald Trump says Andrew McCabe was ‘caught’ plotting to remove him from office
President Trump mocked former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe Wednesday as a “poor man’s J. Edgar Hoover” after the fired lawman claimed in interviews that Justice Department officials discussed removing Mr. Trump from office.
“I think Andrew McCabe has made a fool out of himself over the last couple of days,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “He really looks to me sort of like a poor man’s J. Edgar Hoover.”
Referring to Mr. McCabe’s claim that officials discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office, Mr. Trump said, “What he was trying to do was terrible, and he was caught. I’m very proud to say we caught him.”
He called Mr. McCabe, who was fired last year shortly before he was to retire, “a disgraced man.”
Mr. McCabe said in interviews this week that Justice Department officials discussed action against the president after Mr. Trump fired FBI Director James B. Comey in May 2017. He said DOJ officials were worried that Mr. Trump could even be a Russian asset.
