Six security guards killed in armored car robbery

December 17, 1997

MARBLE HALL, South Africa (AP) _ Robbers smashed a dump truck into two armored cars Wednesday then opened fire, killing six guards and making off with $2 million.

About 20 robbers, apparently armed with AK-47 assault rifles, had placed a spiked chain on the road near the town of Marble Hall, then drove a dump truck into the armored cars, causing both to overturn, police Capt. Malcolm Mokomene said.

Three security guards apparently died in the collision. The other three were shot dead by the robbers, who fled in pickup trucks.

One guard survived long enough to describe the attack to police, then died at scene 110 miles northeast of Johannesburg.

About $2 million was stolen, said Gert Prinsloo of the SBV security company, owner of the armored cars.

Violent crime has become a major concern in South Africa that has led some to call for restoration of the death penalty.
