1 killed in apartment fire in central South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — One woman has died in a fire at an apartment complex in central South Carolina.

News outlets reported the fire started at a complex in Columbia early Thursday morning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release that 44-year-old Francina Harrison Henry was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital and died around 1:30 a.m. Watts said an autopsy showed Henry died from smoke inhalation.

One other person was taken to a hospital because of the fire. There was no word on that person’s condition.

About 50 firefighters, including some from nearby Fort Jackson, battled the blaze.

Officials said about 10 people lost their homes in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
