North Carolina Democratic senator helps GOP colleague on TV
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina Republican legislator facing a difficult re-election campaign is running a television ad in which a Democratic colleague endorses him.
GOP Sen. Jeff Tarte of Mecklenburg County began airing the commercial Tuesday in which only Democratic Sen. Joel Ford speaks.
Ford has run afoul of fellow Democrats in part due to his willingness to vote with Senate Republicans. He ran unsuccessfully for Charlotte mayor last year and lost the Democratic primary for his Senate seat in May.
In the ad , Ford calls Tarte a friend who “puts solutions first and politics last” while pushing for public education improvements and trying to stop an Interstate 77 toll.
Tarte’s Democratic challenger Natasha Marcus says Ford’s endorsement will be “meaningless” and pointed out her support from other Democratic legislators.
