Coach Luxemburgo suspended for criticizing local federation

March 31, 2015

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Former Brazil and Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been suspended for two matches after he criticized the Rio de Janeiro football federation.

Luxemburgo, currently with Flamengo, publicly complained about the federation’s decision to limit the teams’ squads in the regional competition — a decision that prevents the top clubs from testing young players ahead of the Brazilian league.

A judge recently prohibited the federation from fining coaches and players who criticized the tournament.

But the local sports tribunal said in Monday’s ruling that Luxemburgo was punished because his statements went against sporting ethics. Flamengo’s lawyers said Tuesday they will appeal.
